Note: Sadly Donald Leslie passed away 7/30/17
I made a decision to become a part of Shepherd Village along with my partner Donald Leslie because it gave me the opportunity to help plan the community. We have looked at many CCRC’s (Continuing Care Retirement Communities) in a radius of 60 miles, and none say to me that I should live there as a first choice. Shepherd Village gives us a much-desired opportunity to remain in our community for the rest of our lives.
I earned my retirement from teaching art for 36 years first at James Madison High School in Vienna, VA and then for 28 years at Patterson High School in Baltimore, MD. I received a BS in Art Ed from Indiana University of PA in 1959 and an MFA in Art Ed from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1970. I never had a day when I didn’t want to go to work. But in 1998 the call of full time presence in West Virginia was too great — and I have been pleased with that decision every day.
I am a 50-year resident of WV, first in Harpers Ferry where I had an antiques business and later on a farm in Middleway which we began restoring in 1972 — a major love of mine and truly a unique historic property. I have now restored or rebuilt four houses and have worked on others as a result of investing in single family houses beginning in 1985. It gives me an occupation and much satisfaction.
When I turned 65 I took advantage of the benefit of classes at Shepherd University and have now been enrolled in more than 20 visual art classes in the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. I have both exhibited and sold work as a result of these classes.
